FP&A / Corporate Finance

The strategic brain inside the business.

FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis) professionals sit inside companies, not at banks or funds. You build budgets, financial forecasts, and management reporting that helps business leaders make better decisions. You are the CFO's right hand, translating numbers into strategy.

Sample Interview Questions

How would you build a budget for a new product launch?

Show a structured, driver-based approach: 1) Revenue model (units × ASP, by channel, by month. Build in ramp-up curve. 2) COGS) variable cost per unit, direct labour, logistics. 3) Gross margin (target vs industry benchmark. 4) Marketing & sales spend) customer acquisition cost, expected ROI per channel. 5) Headcount plan. 6) Working capital (payment terms, inventory build. 7) Sensitivity analysis) what if volume is 20% below plan? Show you build in scenario planning, not just one-point forecasts.

Revenue was £5M above budget but EBITDA was £1M below. What happened?

Classic FP&A variance question. Walk through the P&L: revenue beat → but what drove it? (volume vs mix vs price). If revenue beat but margin lagged: either costs grew more than revenue (variable cost overrun), gross margin % declined (mix shift to lower-margin products?), or fixed costs were higher (headcount, one-offs). Structure your analysis before answering: 'I'd first split the revenue beat into volume and price/mix, then look at each cost line for overruns, then check if there were any below-the-line one-offs.' Show analytical process, not guessing.

How to Break In, Full Roadmap

FP&A is one of the most accessible finance careers. Graduate programmes exist at almost every large company. The ACA, CIMA, or ACCA accountancy qualification is the most common path.

How to Actually Get Better

  • Master Excel financial modelling, build a 3-statement model from scratch
  • Learn Power BI or Tableau, data visualisation is increasingly essential
  • Study for CIMA or ACCA alongside work, most employers sponsor
  • Understand how the company you're at makes money, not just the numbers
  • Learn to present data clearly, 'storytelling with data' is the #1 skill in FP&A

Skills to Master for Maximum Success

Excel Financial Modelling

Build integrated 3-statement models (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) that link dynamically. Master SUMIFS, XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, array formulas, and data tables. FP&A models need to be fast, flexible, and understandable by non-finance stakeholders.

Power BI / Tableau

Data visualisation is the FP&A superpower. Learn to build executive dashboards in Power BI or Tableau that non-financial managers can actually use. Take the Microsoft Power BI certification, it's free and well-regarded.

CIMA / ACCA / ACA Qualification

The CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) is perfectly aligned with FP&A, since management accounting is exactly what you'll do. ACCA and ACA are also respected. Most employers sponsor your study, so aim to complete within 3 years of starting work.

Business Partnering

The most valued FP&A skill at mid-senior level. Learn to translate financial data into commercial decisions that sales, operations, and marketing leaders actually act on. Read 'The Trusted Advisor' for principles.

SQL & Python Basics

FP&A professionals at tech companies are expected to pull their own data from databases. Learn basic SQL (SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY) and Python pandas. Even basic skills dramatically increase your productivity and marketability.

AI Threat to This Career

AI Risk Level: Medium

AI is automating significant parts of routine FP&A work, variance analysis, report generation, data aggregation. But business partnering, strategic judgment, and CFO communication remain human. FP&A professionals who embrace AI tools will be more valuable, not less.

Tools like Microsoft Copilot for Excel, Pigment, and Anaplan's AI features are beginning to automate monthly reporting cycles. This will reduce headcount for junior data-entry and report-compilation roles. But the business partnering element (sitting with a commercial leader and translating financial data into strategy) requires human judgment, relationship, and context. Senior FP&A professionals are relatively safe.

How to Strengthen Your AI Skills for This Role

  • Learn Microsoft Copilot for Excel and Power BI, AI-native data analysis is becoming the expected standard
  • Use AI to draft variance analysis commentary and management narratives, review and refine rather than write from scratch
  • Learn basic Python for automated data pipeline creation, pulling from multiple source systems into one model
  • Explore AI-powered FP&A tools: Pigment, Planful, Mosaic, knowing these platforms signals forward-thinking
  • Use AI to build scenario models faster: generate bear/base/bull case assumptions and stress-test outputs quickly
